It is well kown that the species of bark beetle communicate with the help of pheromones, thus marking trees for attack. They settle inside the trees until there is no space left - a fact marked with a different pheromone.
Current research tries to establish in how far the dendroglyphs the leave in the wood contain also interspecies messages or other ways of communication.
First results seem to indicate that the insects' markings may contain still undeciphered messages or continuous signals.
As the signs are regularly recurring and show repetitive patterns they could carry meaning as for example in: NOWHERE — NOW HERE
The signs also resemble certain extinct languages from the Mesopotamian region, e.g. Sumerian cuneiform.
(Peschken/Pisarsky are currently working on an Enigma for deciphering the bark beetle messages.)
